The oil and gas industry is usually divided into three major sectors: upstream (or exploration and production - E&P), midstream and downstream.

There are two types of company in the oil and gas industry: one that own and operate the oilfield, and produce petroleum related products, called “Oil company” (also called “Operator”), and the other are companies that provide the services to the industry, called “Service company”.
